Health authorities in Indonesia today reported more than 54,000 new coronavirus infections within 24 hours – the highest number since the pandemic began.
A month ago, the number was less than 10,000, making the Southeast Asian island nation now “the global center” of the pandemic, the Jakarta Globe reported. Indonesia has now overtaken India, where the numbers are declining and around 38,000 new cases were recently confirmed.
Delta variant on the rise
The capital Jakarta on the main island of Java has been particularly badly affected. The government had already imposed stricter measures for Java and the tourist island of Bali at the beginning of July and further tightened entry rules. So far, however, the measures have not been successful. The main reason is the spread of the highly contagious delta variant, which according to the authorities now accounts for 90 percent of all new infections.
At the end of June, the Red Cross had already warned of a collapse of the health system in the fourth most populous country in the world. Indonesia is home to 270 million people. A total of more than 2.6 million cases have been confirmed so far. More than 69,000 people have died in connection with the Covid 19 virus. According to statistics from Our World in Data, less than six percent of the population has been fully vaccinated so far.
