The number of Corona deaths in the UK has risen to the highest daily level in more than four months. On Tuesday, authorities reported the deaths of 131 people, the most since March 17. At that time, 141 people died within four weeks of Corona infection. In the past seven days, there have been 480 Corona deaths nationwide, 40 percent more than the previous week.

“This is partly because of the high number of cases recorded in recent weeks,” said Public Health England medical director Yvonne Doyle. “We know that deaths follow when there are high numbers of new infections, and today’s data show we’re still in the third wave.”

However, there is reason for cautious optimism. On Tuesday, the number of new infections fell for the seventh consecutive day. Just under 230,000 new infections in one week represents a drop of just over 30 percent from the previous week.

Experts, however, are unsure what caused the decline. Possible reasons include the start of the school vacations, the high number of students in self-isolation in the weeks leading up to the vacations and the end of the European soccer championships, when many people were watching the games together in pubs. However, there are also fears that fewer people are getting tested for the coronavirus so as not to risk their summer vacations, and that there is a high number of infected people who are not known to be infected.
