More than 60 million infections with the coronavirus have now been detected in Europe since the start of the CoV pandemic. This means that the European Region accounts for about 30 percent of all cases reported worldwide to date, according to the latest figures released today by the World Health Organization (WHO). As a result, the WHO Regional Office for Europe called for more efforts to make faster and more balanced progress in vaccinating against CoV.
It is important that countries continue their efforts to protect the most vulnerable people and at-risk groups, urged WHO Regional Emergency Director Dorit Nitzan. Sadly, she said, there are now more than 1.2 million deaths linked to Covid-19 in the Region. Globally, there are officially 4.2 million deaths to date.
WHO counts a total of more than 50 countries as part of the Europe Region, including not only the European Union but also countries to the east, such as Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and others. The EU health authority ECDC has so far recorded about 34.4 million infections and more than 740,000 deaths for the 27 EU member states and their partner countries Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, which are linked in the European Economic Area.
