More than 5 billion Corona vaccinations have now been administered around the world. That’s according to a count by the AFP news agency, which evaluated all the information available from official agencies in different countries for this purpose up to Tuesday afternoon.
With 1.96 billion vaccine doses administered, China is still in the lead in a country comparison. It is followed by India (589 million) and the United States (363 million).
Inequality in Corona vaccination campaign
Overall, the global vaccination campaign is still driven by strong inequality. High-income countries have vaccinated an average of 111 doses per 100 population. However, low-income countries have only 2.4 doses per 100 population. Three countries have yet to launch any vaccination campaign at all: Burundi, Eritrea and North Korea.
WHO dissatisfied with vaccine distribution
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday criticized the “shocking inequality” in the distribution of Corona vaccines. Worldwide, 140 countries have vaccinated at least ten percent of their populations,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. In Africa, only four countries have reached that mark, he said. He lamented a lack of “global solidarity.”
