The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) region with the Australian capital Canberra remains in lockdown for another month. The regional government made this decision today after authorities in the territory reported 22 new coronavirus infections within 24 hours.
Canberra is surrounded by the state of New South Wales, which has been particularly hard hit by the current wave and has been in lockdown for just over a month. In mid-August, a CoV case was confirmed in the ACT for the first time in a year.
The regional government further reported that about 50 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated so far. About 430,000 people live in the Australian Capital Territory. Restrictions will not be relaxed until at least 70 percent of citizens have received two doses of vaccination, it said.
Melbourne also in lockdown
The states of New South Wales, with the metropolis of Sydney, and Victoria, with the megacity of Melbourne, also remain in lockdown.
Australia, with its 25 million inhabitants, has pursued a zero-covid-19 strategy since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis and was successful in the fight against the pandemic for a long time because of extremely strict rules. However, due to the spread of the delta variant, lockdowns are becoming more frequent.
