More than 700,000 people have now died in the U.S. after being infected with the corona virus. With 700,258 deaths, the threshold was exceeded on Friday (local time), as reported by Johns Hopkins University. That’s about as many as the entire population of Washington, the nation’s capital.
An average of about 1,000 Corona deaths per day are currently recorded in the United States. Meanwhile, the vaccination campaign has stagnated, with the rate of fully vaccinated U.S. citizens at only 55.7 percent. The debate over the wearing of protective masks is also dividing the country. Several governors from the Republican Party have banned mandatory masks, including in Texas and Florida.
