Slovakia is preparing to vaccinate certain children aged five to eleven against Covid-19. The first vaccinations could take place “this week,” ministry spokeswoman Zuzana Eliasova reported Tuesday. Although there is no approval for this from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) yet, Health Minister Vladimir Lengvarsky had issued an exemption for the vaccination of children five and older.
Eliasova pointed out, however, that vaccinations of this age group will be allowed only in special risk cases and upon written request of the parents. The exemption, she said, will apply only to children who are at exceptionally high risk of dying from it or suffering particularly serious consequences if they contract Covid-19.
The vaccinations would only be allowed to take place in three specially equipped hospitals in the country. Each individual application would have to be individually assessed and approved by a specialist.
In September, misleading reports, including in the German-language media, gave the impression that schoolchildren under the age of twelve were also being systematically vaccinated against Covid-19 in Slovakia. Eliasova, on the other hand, clarified that there had not been a single vaccination in this age group in Slovakia to date.
