The death toll from tropical storm Kompasu in the Philippines continues to rise, with at least 30 people killed in landslides and flash floods, the national disaster management agency said Thursday. At least 13 others were missing. The provinces of Ilocos Sur and Benguet on the main island of Luzon were particularly affected. Most of the victims were reportedly buried by landslides or drowned.
“Kompasu,” which is called “Maring” in the Philippines, had been moving across the north of the Southeast Asian island nation with heavy rain and strong winds since last weekend. More than 14,900 people had to leave their homes, authorities said. Agriculture was also hit hard, they said. The tropical storm had left the Philippines on Wednesday and moved weakened toward China and Vietnam.
The Philippines is hit by an average of about 20 typhoons each year. In November 2020, tropical storm “Vamco” had killed nearly 70 people. The worst typhoon to date, “Haiyan,” had claimed the lives of more than 6,300 people in November 2013. More than four million people had to flee.
