Welthungerhilfe has warned of a rise in famines. Secretary-General Mathias Mogge told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland: “We have dramatically deviated from the course Zero Hunger by 2030, because hunger is on the rise again.” Currently, he said, some 811 million people worldwide were hungry, with 41 million on the brink of famine. “The current World Hunger Index shows that 47 countries will not even reach low levels of hunger by 2030.”
Welthungerhilfe will officially launch the so-called 2021 World Hunger Index this Thursday in Berlin. The international report identifies the global hunger situation and aims to show where progress is being made and in which countries the greatest need for action exists.
“Welthungerhilfe is calling for political initiatives to curb conflicts worldwide, financial efforts to address acute famines,” Mogge added. In addition, binding agreements are needed at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow to combat climate change, he added.
The food situation is worsening because of the many different crises, he said. Mogge mentioned wars and conflicts, climate change and the consequences of the Corona pandemic. Violent conflicts have increased again in recent years, he said. They are one of the biggest hunger drivers, he said. “Where there is war, crops, fields as well as infrastructure are destroyed and people flee their villages.”
