A new mutation of the delta variant of the Corona virus has been identified in a growing number of infections in the United Kingdom and Russia. Around 6 percent of cases are now thought to be due to this mutation, known among experts as AY.4.2. or “Delta Plus,” which is thought to have properties that make the virus more survivable. Ongoing tests will show whether the mutation is even more contagious than the already known delta variant. But it is considered unlikely that it could be resistant to vaccination. The World Health Organization says it is keeping an eye on the new mutant. AY.4.2 has two additional mutations, the WHO said Thursday (Oct. 21).
