The fourth wave continued to pick up speed during the fall vacations. In the past 24 hours, 5,861 new infections were added.
More than 5,000 new cases per day had last occurred in the second wave in November 2020. In addition, 100 deaths were added in the past week alone. On Friday, significantly more Covid 19 patients also had to be treated in hospitals again.
Almost exactly eleven months ago – on November 26, 2020 – more than 5,000 new infections had been reported by the Interior and Health Ministries, with 5,526. The 5,861 reported today is well above last week’s average of 3,996 infections. The seven-day incidence has now risen to 313.1 cases per 100,000 population. As of today, Friday, the last weekday of the fall vacations, there were thus already 39,843 confirmed active cases – more than the Upper Austrian city of Steyr has inhabitants.
Since Thursday alone, 17 more deaths have been reported. Overall, the Covid 19 pandemic has already claimed 11,333 lives in Austria since the outbreak. Per 100,000 inhabitants, 126.9 people have died as a result of coronavirus infection.
There were already 1,370 people in hospital on Friday, 81 more than on Thursday. 280 seriously ill people are cared for in intensive care units – by 15 more than the previous day. Within a week, 56 Covid 19 patients were added to intensive care.
