Former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced his retirement from politics. He will step down as ÖVP leader and as club chairman in the National Council, he said at a press conference on Thursday morning. At this he looked back on his ten-year political career. With the birth of his son, as well as the “accusations, allegations and proceedings,” his enthusiasm for politics had waned, he said. “It was the honor of my life,” Kurz said.
Kurz announced a meeting of the federal party executive board for Friday. At that time, he said, the ÖVP will agree on a new party leader. He did not say who that would be. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer is to become chancellor in any case, as published in various Austrian newspapers online. This would also mark the end of Alexander Schallenberg’s time as head of government. In the National Council August Wöginger will again take over the role of the ÖVP Klubobmann.
