A hard lockdown has been in effect again in Austria for two weeks. Infection numbers continue to decline. From Monday to Tuesday, there were 4,233 new infections in Austria. Today’s new infections are further below the average of the past seven days of 6,763. In addition, this brings the number of active cases down further to 96,128. In the past 24 hours, 358,700 new PCR tests were performed. This results in a positive rate of 1.18 percent. The seven-day incidence rate dropped to 531.86.
There are also 77 new deaths associated with Covid-19 infection to report. Thus, the pandemic has claimed 12,921 lives in Austria so far. The last time so many deaths were registered within one day was on January 19. m Seven-day average was 61.3 deaths per day. In the past week alone, 429 corona-infected people died. Per 100,000 population, 144.6 people have died from or with covid-19 since the pandemic began. The highest number of deaths occurred in Styria, where 190.6 per 100,000 people died as a result of infection, while in Carinthia the figure was 175.1. The western provinces recorded the lowest mortality rates. In Tyrol, there were 99.1 Covid 19 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, in Vorarlberg 96.9.
Another all-time high
The 670 intensive care patients were nine more than on Monday. More were previously only in the second wave a year ago. As of Nov. 25, 2020, 709 Covid-19 patients had been cared for in ICUs. While Carinthia, Lower Austria and Salzburg already recorded new highs in the number of critically ill patients in the fourth wave, Tyrol and Vorarlberg continued to approach it.
In Tyrol, 70 Covid 19 patients were in intensive care units on Tuesday, six more than on Monday. The highest number had been 81 on Dec. 3, 2020. In Vorarlberg, 32 intensive care beds were occupied by Covid patients on Tuesday, three more than the previous day. The previous high had been reached on Nov. 19, 2020, with 44 intensive care patients. A total of 3,115 Covid 19-infected people were in hospitals across Austria on Tuesday, eight more than the previous day.
