In a press conference on Tuesday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced that the lockdown for vaccinated people will end on December 12.
Further details are not known at this time.
Lockdown end in Austria for vaccinated from 12 December
As planned, the lockdown for vaccinated people in Austria will end on December 12. This was announced by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) at a press conference on Tuesday. For unvaccinated, however, the lockdown continues to apply. It is no longer a question of whether, but how the lockdown will be ended, the Chancellor stressed.
Already in the run-up, the provincial governors had jointly agreed on a three-week duration of the retail and gastronomy lockdowns. Due to the positive trends, they can now reopen as planned. The exact details of what the opening steps will look like in concrete terms are still being clarified, Nehammer said. On Wednesday, it will be discussed together with experts and the provincial governors how the openings can take place safely.
Trade, catering trade & hotel trade open again
From December 12, stores, gastronomy and the hotel industry are allowed to reopen. However, the exact conditions are still unclear. These will now also be discussed with experts, Nehammer said at the press conference on Tuesday.
For unvaccinated people everything remains as before. However, it is not about a “against each other”, but much more about a “together in the closed fight against the virus”, said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein.
Doubts about openings
Due to the tense situation in many hospitals, there have recently been doubts about whether the lockdown can actually be ended. For example, Tyrolean Governor Günther Platter and Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhofer called for a cautious approach. In addition, the situation in Lower Austria also remains tense, according to the regional government there. However, pressure is coming from the business community, which is calling for a rapid opening. The final decision on how to proceed is to be made at a joint summit tomorrow.
