More than 277.09 million people worldwide have been confirmed to have contracted coronavirus by the end of December
That’s according to a Reuters count based on official data. More than 5.67 million people have died with or from the virus since it was first detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.
U.S. has highest coronavirus infection numbers
The United States has the highest infection numbers, followed by India, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Russia. The USA also has the highest number of deaths. Brazil, Russia, India and Mexico are next in line.
Meanwhile, health officials in the U.S. said at least 230,456 new infections occurred within 24 hours. That’s according to a Reuters count based on official data. At least 3,288 more people died with or from the coronavirus. In all, more than 51.85 million cases of infection have been detected since the pandemic began, and at least 818,073 people have died. The U.S., home to about 330 million people, has the highest infection and death rates in the world. The omicron mutant has already displaced the delta mutant as the most common viral variant in that country.
High infection figures in Russia
In Russia, health authorities recorded 998 additional coronavirus-related deaths within 24 hours. In addition, 24,703 people were confirmed to have contracted coronavirus. Globally, Russia ranks fifth in the number of infection cases and fourth in the number of deaths.
