Case numbers are rising rapidly. Omicron gives the pandemic a house number of new infections in Austria.

Since Tuesday, a huge number of infections have brought the Omicron wave. Accordingly, Austria is on alert and this is also reflected on the Corona map of the country. According to the map, the entire Alpine republic is considered a high-risk area and is colored red.

The color of the provinces is based on the seven-day incidence. A value of 100 or more means high risk and the change of color to red. At present, the best federal state would be Burgenland: in the east of Austria, however, the value has already risen to 432.

This number still sounds moderate compared to other federal states. Tyrol, for example, already cracked the 2,000(!) mark last week and is holding at 2,212. Meanwhile, the trend of rising case numbers is noticeable throughout the country, in every district.

In Upper Austria there was already a doubling of the new infections within the last two weeks, in Salzburg this value rose by 68 per cent. Both federal states were already considered problem areas in the past – the peak is unlikely to have been reached here yet.

However, the discovery of the many new infections is due to the large testing rush. In relation to 100,000 inhabitants, the national average was 106,499 Corona tests last week. The front-runner here is Vienna – in the federal capital, as many as 149,000 tests per 100,000 inhabitants were needed.

In addition to the highest test rate, Vienna also has the highest positive rate. 44 percent of the tests given in Vienna were positive. The tests help to detect asymptomatic cases. Almost one in three infected people (31 percent) would currently have an asymptomatic course.

Due to the increasing number of cases, contact tracing in the country has almost completely collapsed. Only in 36 percent of cases do the authorities succeed in contact tracing.
