The number of Ukrainian refugees could rise to 1.5 million by the end of the weekend, according to estimates by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Currently, there are 1.3 million, UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told Reuters news agency yesterday.
The number of people fleeing the Russian war of aggression from Ukraine remains manageable in Austria for the time being. As the Interior Ministry announced in response to an APA inquiry, around 4,000 people arrive here from the region every day. Very few want to stay in the country—80 percent travel to other countries.
Yesterday, the EU member states unanimously adopted a resolution to this effect. This is the first time a directive has come into force in a “mass influx” of displaced persons. The protection for people from Ukraine is initially valid for one year but can be extended for two more years.
This eliminates the need for a lengthy asylum procedure. In addition, those seeking protection have immediate rights to social benefits, education, housing, and a work permit, among other things.
