South Africa and Botswana have one thing in common in the Corona pandemic: they have encountered Omicron sublines BA.4 and BA.5 there, according to WHO. But what is the situation in Vienna?
BA.4 and BA.5 in Europe
“Botswana, South Africa deepen the investigation of new Omicron sub-variants”: This week’s title of a WHO report is sensational. It concerns the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants, from which Vienna, however, has probably been spared so far. There have not been any cases yet, a spokeswoman for the City of Vienna’s health service as published by vienna.at in response to a query. “The 3 Vienna BA.2+L452R(cases) so far are not BA.4/BA.5 cases after consultation with Lifebrain,” she explained. The reason for this, she said, is the lack of other mutations.

BA.4 and BA.5 might not even have arrived in Austria yet: “So far, we (…) have not been able to detect any ba4/5,” wrote molecular biologist Ulrich Elling of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) to VIENNA.at
