New Corona variants BA.4 and BA.5 in Vienna
The UK has classified the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 as variants of concern. Analysis of available data to the date indicated a growth advantage over the still-prevalent omicron subvariant BA.2, the U.K. health authority said Friday. So far, however, the number of cases in the U.K. has been very manageable – there are 115 confirmed or suspected cases of BA.4 and 80 cases of BA.5, it said.
Corona variants BA.4 and BA.5 have been detected in Austria
In Austria, the new Covid 19 subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 were detected for the first time earlier this month. The city of Vienna reported the first cases of variant BA.4 and one case of variant BA.5 to the Ministry of Health. Individual patients were also identified in Styria and Salzburg. The Covid Prognosis Consortium reported the potential growth advantage in its update, citing international observational data.
Corona variant BA is also multiplying in Germany
The proportion of the omicron subvariant BA.5 is also increasing in Germany, but at a deficient level so far. It was 1.4 percent according to the latest available data, a sample from the week before last. It was 0.5 and 0.3 percent in previous weeks, according to Thursday’s Corona weekly report from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). For BA.4, only a minimal increase has been seen in Germany, from 0.1 to 0.3 percent.
According to WHO, the Corona variants BA.4 and BA.5 are of concern
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the Omicron sub-variants BA.1 to BA.5 and variants derived from them and mixed variants of the pathogen to be variants of concern. The first Omikron subtypes caused massive waves of infection during the winter.
