Austria must continue preparing for wintry and fresh weather during Christmas. Snow will fall again in the middle of the week.
Monday will be cloudy in the north but mostly dry. In the Danube region, in the Waldviertel and the southern basins, persistent high fog will persist in some areas, and the sun will appear during the day, especially from Vorarlberg to the Tauern region. In the east, a brisk, icy southeast wind will blow. Temperatures will rise mainly to -4 to +2 degrees Celsius, in the western mountainous areas locally up to +10 degrees Celsius with an upcoming southerly foehn.
On Tuesday, the sun will frequently shine in the mountains with a few veil clouds. In the lowlands, in the Waldviertel, as well as in the southern basins, however, one must continue to expect tenacious high fog. In the Danube region, moderate winds from east to southeast, in the Alps it will be slightly foehn. Mostly the highs will be between -1 and +7 degrees; in the foggy regions, such as the Waldviertel, it will remain colder. In contrast, even double-digit plus degrees can be expected in the low mountain ranges and foehn valleys on the northern side of the Alps.
Wednesday will start primarily dry, but only in the eastern mountains; the sun will shine at times in the morning. From Vorarlberg, light rain will spread to large parts of the country during the day. The snow line will drop from 2,000 to 1,000 meters, but notable amounts of new snow are not expected anywhere. Only a few drops will fall in the east and south, but there is a risk of black ice here. With a moderate wind temporarily shifting to the west, the highs will range between -1 and +8 degrees.
