Hardly anyone thinks about the right temperature around the refrigerator and freezer. At the same time, the temperature is essential for the shelf life of stored food.
A survey by the electrical mail-order company AO has revealed that more than half of all Germans and Austrians have not set their refrigerator correctly.
This is the right temperature.
The best temperature for your refrigerator is between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius. Thirty-one percent of the people surveyed set it too cold, and 25 percent too warm. Both are not recommended and should be avoided at all costs. Eighteen percent of the people taking part in the survey even stated that they don’t know how cold a refrigerator should be and have no starting point for this.
What does it look like in the freezer?
The temperature in the freezer is, of course, much colder than in the refrigerator and should ideally be around -18°C. The freezer is only -16°C cold for more than a third of respondents. This is too warm.
Hygiene in the refrigerator
The results from the question on hygiene were shocking—only 20 percent clean the refrigerator weekly, and 27 percent at least monthly.
Store correctly
An incredible 95% of respondents said it was essential to them that the refrigerator’s contents were stored properly. The results are surprising: more than half do not store food correctly. Pay attention to the different temperatures depending on the compartment and storage location in the refrigerator.
