Tangerines are in the high season during the winter season. Many remove the white skin – but you shouldn’t!
Opinions differ regarding the thin white skin that wraps around the tangerine. Some meticulously remove the threads because they find the whiteness disturbing or even consider it unhealthy, while others advocate eating the fruit with white skin. So what is “right”?

Although tangerines contain (fruit) sugar, they are also full of vitamins, trace elements and minerals, and provide your body with essential nutrients, as “Utopia” reports. Among them are vitamin C, B1 and B2, potassium, calcium and folic acid.

So what about the white skin? Better to remove it, or can you eat it without hesitation? The two most common reasons why some remove the white are: Some don’t like the feeling of the white strings in their mouths, find it annoying, and others think the whiteness is unhealthy. But precisely, the opposite is the case.

In technical jargon, the white skin between the flesh and the peel is called “mesocarp” or also “albedo,” according to a report in “Focus.” Unlike the skin, which is often contaminated with pesticides, white is not toxic but very healthy.

This is why you should eat the white skin
According to “Fit for Fun,” white skin contains exceptionally high vitamin C and secondary plant compounds. These have an antioxidant effect and can thus strengthen the body’s defence mechanisms. In addition, valuable dietary fibres ensure that the feeling of satiety lasts longer.

Researchers also found that a substance called nobiletin is found in the mesocarp. This is known to boost fat burning. However, it should not be unmentioned that the research results come from animal experiments. Whether the same effect occurs in humans has not yet been proven, as explained in a “Medizin transparent” report.
