As of December 5, Austrians will have to change their digital identity for good. On this date, the ID-Austria will finally replace the cell phone signature that has also been used.

Also accepted in other EU countries
Florian Tursky (ÖVP, Austrian People’s Party), Secretary of State for Digitalization, justified the change with the technical security standards. In addition, he said, ID-Austria also meets European standards so that it can be accepted in other EU countries.

According to Tursky, the cell phone signature currently has 2.8 million users. However, 1.5 million also already have ID-Austria in pilot operation.

The most common use case for a digital official channel is the finanz.online platform, which can be used, for example, to carry out the employee tax assessment.

How to get the ID-Austria
Tursky claims that switching from the cell phone signature to the ID-Austria, which has been possible for a while, is very easy. Anyone who logs into their existing cell phone signature as of December 5 can switch their account to the basic version in just a few steps. However, the full function of ID-Austria, with far more possibilities, can only be activated by an authority, as personal identification, for example, via a passport, is required for this.

Over 400 digital public services
According to the State Secretary, more than 400 public services will be available via ID-Austria. In addition, there are already 68 private-sector services. For example, banks are holding discussions to simplify credit processing with ID Austria. Another critical factor for ID-Austria is compatibility within the EU. For example, it is possible to identify oneself at a university abroad.
