The new Digital Vignette 2024 is now available. What is essential to consider, and what is now changing for drivers?
Since November 13, the new digital vignette has been available in the Asfinag toll store and the free Asfinag app, as well as at the six toll stations, ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC, and at selected petrol stations and tobacconists. Registration of the license plate eliminates the need for sticking and scratching off, and a replacement vignette is no longer required in case of a broken window. Even owners of interchangeable license plates no longer need a separate vignette for each vehicle.
But beware! The new digital annual vignette, even if already purchased today, is only valid until December 1, 2023.
Important: Drivers must purchase a digital annual vignette online by today, November 13, at the latest, to ensure it is valid until December 1. The reason for this is the consumer protection period for online purchases. According to the EU Consumer Protection Directive, customers can withdraw from the online purchase of a product or service; the digital vignette is, therefore, only valid for 18 days after purchase.
If you buy the ARBÖ or ÖAMTC digital vignette, the 18-day waiting period does not apply – a plus point, especially for those making last-minute decisions.
A new feature this year is that the digital vignette can also be re-registered if, for example, you have been assigned a new license plate number due to a change of vehicle. “This fulfills a long-standing demand of the ÖAMTC. In the past, changing vehicles has always led to problems and additional costs with the digital vignette. This is now a thing of the past,” says a delighted ÖAMTC lawyer, Ursula Zelenka.
However, when using the digital vignette, there are constant stumbling blocks and unwanted replacement tolls. For example, people often forget to re-register if they have changed their residence. “The change of license plate number must be reported to Asfinag. The transfer of the existing digital vignette costs 18 euros,” says ÖAMTC lawyer Ursula Zelenka.
The classic adhesive vignette will be available on November 22, this time in sun yellow. Anyone who wants to switch from the adhesive to the digital vignette during the year can only do so free of charge in two cases: “If the windshield breaks or in the event of a total loss,” says the lawyer.
In Austria, vignettes are compulsory for cars, motorcycles and light motorhomes. Anyone caught without a valid vignette must pay a replacement toll of 120 euros. The new vignette is valid until December 1, 2023, and expires on January 31, 2025. The vignette for the year 2023 remains valid until January 31, 2024.
