The freezer is indispensable in most households, but certain incorrect storage methods can cause damage that can be costly. According to experts, certain foods should be avoided in the freezer as they can cause damage and result in expensive repairs, as Nyheder24.dk reports.
An expert from RGB Direct, one of the UK’s largest electronics retailers, has shared his expertise on what items you should never put in the freezer to prolong their lives. These include canned foods, carton eggs, and even certain fruits and vegetables.
The first warning concerns canned food. Experts strongly advise against “freezing canned foods in their original cans,” as the contents freeze and expand, which can cause the cans to burst. If you want to freeze canned foods, the experts recommend “transferring them to a freezer box.”
Eggs with shells should also not be frozen, as the liquid inside can expand and cause the shell to burst. “If you want to freeze eggs, it’s better to crack them, whisk them, and store the egg mixture in an airtight container,” the experts advised.
Foods like lettuce, cucumbers, and watermelon can “become mushy and lose their texture” when frozen due to their high water content. Although they can still be used for cooking after freezing, “they will not retain their original crispness.”
Dairy products, such as milk and yoghurt, can change their structure and separate when frozen. However, the experts added that “hard cheeses such as cheddar and parmesan can be frozen.”
Lastly, the experts advise to “be careful when putting food in glass containers in the freezer,” as they can break. If you need to freeze food in glass, they recommend using “freezer-safe glass containers.”
In addition, they give a good rule of thumb: keep the freezer at the “recommended temperature”, which is usually around -18 °C.
