Flies circling around you while you’re eating are probably annoying for most people, but nothing you give a second thought to. That could change from now on when you see what flies do when they land on your plate.
Instead of taking a large bite of your schnitzel, “they spew a kind of saliva directly onto your food,” according to a YouTube video. That’s because flies can’t chew like humans. “This saliva contains digestive enzymes that break down the food into a slurpable liquid.” The fly then sucks this up with its proboscis like a smoothie and consumes the food in this way.”
Dr. Cameron Webb from the University of Sydney (Australia) addressed the question of whether people should remove flies from their food or throw it away. “Flies that land out of sight and wander around for a few minutes, vomiting and pooping on your food or preparation area, are more concerning. The more time that passes, the greater the likelihood that the pathogens left behind by the flies will multiply on our food. Then the health risk increases,” Dr. Webber wrote.
According to Webb, the risk is greater outside of the city because there are more flies, making it more likely to come into contact with a dead animal or animal waste. “Keep your food covered when preparing, cooking, and serving outside, and do not leave ‘leftovers’ for the flies.”
