Wiener Linien plans to intensify investment in the public transport infrastructure further this year. In 2024 alone, 223 million euros will be budgeted for various modernizations. Work will be carried out at around 100 locations this year, as the managing directors of Wiener Linien, Alexandra Reinagl and Gudrun Senk, explained on Monday. However, there will be some restrictions: the U4 will not run continuously for several weeks but will again be divided into two sections.
Modernization work is being carried out in virtually all areas. Tunnel connections, signal boxes, elevators, stations and stops, and, last but not least, tracks are being renovated. Last year, it was calculated that streetcars, for example, covered 38 million kilometers of track today. The strain is making itself felt.
That is why 76 million euros will flow into the renewal of the Bim tracks in the next two years alone. This year, 53 points will be replaced, and more than 8.6 kilometers of track will be renewed. Next year, more than eleven kilometers will be renewed. In addition, eleven elevators and 29 escalators in Vienna’s public transport network will be renewed this year.
Wiener Linien: closures possible
Most construction sites should not cause any major restrictions for passengers. It is said that three-quarters of them should be virtually unnoticeable. Where possible, work should be carried out during non-operating times or during vacations. “However, this is not always possible,” emphasized Senk. There could very well be restrictions or even complete closures.
Partial closure of the Vienna U4
This applies once again to the U4. In July and August, the line will have to be divided again. It is not passable in the area between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring. The tunnel girders are being renovated there.
Work on Wiedner Hauptstraße will begin as early as April. On this important connection, tracks will be replaced and relocated. The new position of the tracks will enable the construction of a two-way cycle path and the creation of new green spaces, according to a coordinated approach with other city departments.
Millions for the expansion of the subway network
Wiener Linien is spending 864 million euros this year – mainly underground. The lion’s share will go towards the current expansion of the subway network.
