The leisurely warming of spring gives way to an abrupt change in the weather: a striking cold front originating from western Russia heralds the arrival of unsettled and noticeably cooler days in Austria.
Winter comeback
Last Saturday was spoiled with glorious sunshine and summery temperatures, but the weather forecast points to a change: colder times are on the horizon. A cold front is already moving over Germany, affecting the Austrian weather starting Monday.
This weather front will bring cooler temperatures and a north-westerly high-altitude current that will make the coming week noticeably cooler. Localised thunderstorms may also occur. Fresh snow is even expected from Tuesday.
The forecast in detail
A cooler Tuesday awaits us
Tuesday promises unsettled weather and significantly cooler temperatures. Snow will fall from around 1000 metres. There will be heavy rain, especially in the south, while there may be dry and isolated sunny spells in the north. The wind will blow moderately to strongly from a westerly to north-westerly direction, and temperatures will reach a maximum of 6 to 13 degrees.
Snowfall down to 400 metres
On Wednesday, intermittent rain and snow up to 700 metres are to be expected, especially on the northern side of the Alps. It will remain mostly dry in the north-east, with sunny spells between the showers in the south. The wind will remain brisk and strong from the north-west. Temperatures will barely rise above 5 to 13 degrees.
Improving weather in the east
On Thursday, the sun will shine at times in the east, while isolated showers will pass through in the south. However, in Vorarlberg, Upper Styria, and parts of Lower Austria, dense clouds will bring rain, sleet, and even snow showers up to an altitude of 400 metres. The wind will blow strongly from the north-west. Temperatures will reach 5 to 14 degrees.
