To ensure that everything runs smoothly on the journey home from your vacation, travelers should follow a few tips.
Every year, travelers bring back souvenirs from all over the world. “The safest vacation souvenir is always a photo. If you do want a souvenir, please follow the tips for a carefree return journey,” advises Austrian Finance Minister Brunner.
In principle, the free movement of goods applies within the EU. However, there are exceptions: Upper limits must be observed for alcohol or tobacco. Four cartons of cigarettes are permitted, a limit of 10 liters applies to alcohol and 90 liters to wine.
Special care is required with beach souvenirs. The ÖAMTC also warns of hefty fines in popular vacation destinations such as Croatia, Italy and Greece. Rare species of mussels or snails may be an attractive souvenir from Croatia, but it is illegal to export them. The situation is similar on Italian beaches. Penalties of up to 3000 euros can be imposed there. In Spain, too, natural objects are not allowed in your luggage.
In Greece, on the other hand, excavated finds are taboo. These do not have to be particularly unique, simple stones on the grounds of archaeological sites even fall under this category.
The protection of species is also tricky when taking items from Asian or African regions. According to the Ministry of Finance, items such as ivory, tropical wood or products from protected animal species are often not allowed on board or only with special documents.
