On Saturday, the police are warning of a parcel delivery scam in which large sums of money disappear quickly.
On Saturday, the police are issuing an urgent warning about fraudulent parcel deliverers and looking for scam victims. The criminologists describe how the scam works using a case from Hohenems. On June 6, 2024, two men rang the doorbell of an apartment in the early afternoon and pretended to be delivery men for the tenant. The tenant was actually expecting a package that had been ordered that day.
After that, everything happened quickly: the supposed delivery men demanded payment of the customs fee of 141.20 euros for the online parcel, which appeared legitimate based on their knowledge of the order. The victim paid 150 euros and received the ordered parcel and a “receipt” with the pre-printed amount of “0.00 euros.” The two men then drove off in a black van.
It was only afterward that the victim realized that he had just become a victim of criminals. The parcel had probably been left in front of the victim’s door by a “real” delivery service shortly beforehand; the two unknown criminals probably took it and obtained the delivery information from the data on the parcel. They then rang the doorbell and pretended to be delivery men.
Other injured parties are requested by the police to report to the Hohenems police station. The two suspects were described as follows from the statement of the injured party: They were an older man and a corpulent, younger man. The older man, of slim build and with a beard, talked to the victim and, according to the victim, spoke High German.
