On September 21, 2024, the Bicolano community in Austria gathered to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, a significant occasion deeply rooted in the culture and faith of the Bicolanos. This year, however, the celebration took on a different form due to challenging circumstances, namely the recent flooding in Lower Austria. The normal fluvial procession, which typically takes place on the Danube River, was officially called off. Nevertheless, the spirit of devotion and community remained vibrant, exemplifying the resilience and unity of the Bicolano diaspora.
The Significance of the Feast
The Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is a cherished annual tradition for Bicolanos, not just in the Philippines but across the globe. This celebration honours the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia, regarded as the patroness of Bicolandia. As Fr. Edmer Eronga, a Filipino priest visiting from Italy, eloquently expressed, “Our Ina, we call her, the Mother of God and not only, but the mother of us.” He emphasized the maternal qualities of Our Lady, asserting that she listens, loves, and cares for her children. Such sentiments resonate profoundly with the attendees and reinforce their deep emotional and spiritual connection to this figure.
The Adjustments Due to Recent Flooding
The recent floods in Austria have posed significant challenges, most notably impacting the Danube River, a vital artery for transportation and cultural gatherings. Due to the river’s uncharacteristically low water levels, the DDSG (Danube River Cruise Company) took precautionary measures and suspended all Danube cruises, including the Peñafrancia Fluvial Procession. As a result, organizers had to pivot quickly to secure an alternative venue for the celebration.
Location Change: The procession with the Image of INA was redirected to the premises of the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy. This location provided a safe and accommodating environment for the community to gather.
Continuation of Traditions: Despite the change in venue, the event retained its cultural significance. The procession culminated in a Holy Mass, exemplifying the community’s commitment to honouring their traditions.
A Community United in Faith
In the weeks leading up to the feast, the Filipino Catholic Church in Vienna’s 10th District served as a hub of activity, hosting a 9-day novena. This period of prayer was marked by nightly gatherings, where devotees would come together for spiritual reflection and community bonding. The novena incorporated “salo-salo,” or communal meals, sponsored by various independent Bicol support organizations, thereby enhancing the sense of unity among attendees.
Contributions from the Community
The Peñafrancia Committee of the Bicol Society in Austria, led by Marizel Rojas, played a crucial role in organizing a meaningful celebration. Their efforts ensured that traditional elements of the feast were preserved, allowing participants to feel a sense of familiar joy and devotion.
Ambassador Evangelina Arroyo Bernas expressed gratitude to the Filipino Chaplaincy for facilitating a worthy Peñafrancia celebration. Her acknowledgement highlighted the importance of the Filipino community’s collective efforts in adapting to the circumstances while maintaining cultural heritage.
