Geosphere Austria is forecasting a cooling on Sunday after the end of a mild October. Light frost is to be expected in Lower Austria in particular. The cool temperatures will persist in the north and east. Last October was very mild.
On Friday, after the fog and high fog patches in the north, the basin locations in the south, as well as in the Rhine Valley and some inner Alpine valleys, have cleared, an extremely sunny day will set in. The sun shines from the morning onwards. A few harmless, high clouds are visible in the south and east. The wind will be light and early temperatures will range between one and eight degrees, while afternoon temperatures will be between 13 and 19 degrees.
Snowline drops on Saturday
Clouds will gather from the north on Saturday, and it will be widely overcast north of the Alps. There may be light rain at times. The snow line will drop from the north to 1,500 meters above sea level during the course of the day and a little lower north of the Danube. In the west and south, it will initially be widely sunny, with patches of fog and high mist still clouding the morning, especially in southern Styria and the Rhine Valley. In the afternoon, high cloud fields will gather and temporarily cloud the sunshine. The wind will blow weakly to moderately, in the east also briskly from west to north. The daily lows will be between two and ten degrees, and the daily highs will be between nine and 17 degrees.
Morning frost in Lower Austria from Sunday
On Sunday, residual nighttime clouds in the country’s east and patches of fog in the south and inner Alpine valleys will mostly clear during the morning. In the other regions, the sun will mostly shine from the start of the day. Occasional high veil clouds will only slightly dampen the sunshine. The wind will blow weakly in Upper Austria and parts of Lower Austria, moderately or slightly freshening from easterly directions during the day. From minus three to plus seven degrees in the morning, with light frost, especially in Lower Austria and Mariazellerland, temperatures will rise to six to 16 degrees.
Start of the week with fog
On Monday morning, fog patches near bodies of water and in the inner Alps will mostly clear quickly, and the sun will shine brightly throughout the day. The wind will generally remain weak. In the morning, there will be light frost between minus four degrees and one degree in the north and east and in some valleys, with only plus degrees in the west and partly in the south. Daytime highs will reach eight to 13 degrees in the west, even over 15 degrees in some places. Tuesday will start mostly sunny, apart from local patches of early morning fog in valleys and basins and near bodies of water. After the remaining fog patches have cleared, the sun will shine continuously in these areas under mostly cloudless skies. The wind will be mostly light and blowing from different directions. Early temperatures will reach minus two to plus two degrees, with daytime highs of eight to twelve degrees.
Very mild October
According to the preliminary data from Geosphere, October was far from frosty: in the lowlands, it was the eleventh warmest in recorded history, and in the mountains, it even reached eighth place. Across Austria, there was slightly too much precipitation and slightly too little sunshine—both measured against the long-term average. “October 2024 was 2.0 degrees above the average for the 1991 to 2020 climate period in Austria’s lowlands and 2.2 degrees in the summit regions,” said climatologist Alexander Orlik from Geosphere Austria. The month started with a few cool days, but it was warmer than an average October throughout Austria for the rest of the month. Compared to the 1961–1990 climate period, October 2024 was 2.7 degrees above average in the lowlands and 2.3 degrees above average in the mountains. This makes October 2024 the seventeenth consecutive month in Austria’s lowlands to be above the already very warm climate average from 1991 to 2020. The last relatively cool month was May 2023. In the mountains, too, it was almost consistently too warm in the last seventeen months, with only September and November 2023 being relatively cool.
