From November, the weather-dependent obligation to use winter tires on all roads will apply again in Austria

This regulation stipulates that in winter road conditions – i.e. snow, slush or ice – all vehicles must be equipped with suitable tires. Anyone who disregards the rules risks a fine of 50 euros. However, if other road users are endangered by incorrect tires, the fine can rise to up to 10,000 euros. The regulation applies to cars, small trucks and so-called “moped cars”.

Check winter tires
Even if the weather is still mild, it is advisable to make an appointment to change your tires in advance. Winter tires must have a marking such as “M+S” or the Alpine symbol (three mountain peaks with a snowflake) and a minimum tread depth of 4 mm (5 mm for cross-ply tires). Before changing, the tread depth of older winter tires should be checked to ensure their suitability.

The ÖAMTC also advises breaking in new winter tires carefully. Motorcycle tires, in particular, should be driven at a moderate speed for the first 200 kilometers, and extreme braking manoeuvres and tight cornering should be avoided. After this running-in period, the tire develops its full grip.

How to store
Summer tires are best stored on rims, ideally lying flat or hanging on the wall. A so-called rim tree can be helpful here, as it ensures stable storage and good air circulation.
