Seven people have been killed and three others injured in a landslide in the Philippines as a result of heavy rainfall caused by typhoon “Man-Yi.” The masses of earth buried the people’s houses underneath them, said Kristine Falcon from the disaster agency of the province of Nueva Vizcaya on Monday. The death toll from “Man-yi” thus rose to eight.
The super typhoon hit the Philippine coast on Saturday with wind speeds of 195 km/h and moved on to the main island of Luzon, where Nueva Vizcaya is located, on Sunday. More than 1.2 million people took shelter as a precaution, including several thousand in Manila’s capital.
“Man-Yi,” also known as ‘Pepito’ in the Philippines, is the sixth strong storm to hit the country in a month. Over the mountains of Luzon, it weakened from a super typhoon to a typhoon. However, the weather service continued to warn of flooding and landslides due to the heavy rainfall.
