New Year’s resolutions are as universal as New Year’s Eve fireworks: everyone has them and knows them, and they are always the same. And that applies to all of us—maybe we’re not as different as we always think.

It’s that time of year again: the old year is almost over, and 1 January is just around the corner. It awakens in many of us the irrepressible desire to turn our lives completely upside down—at least for a few weeks. Here are the most popular New Year’s resolutions:

  1. Exercise more
The desire to get fitter is at the top of the list of New Year’s resolutions. Gyms experience a real rush in January every year. Motivation is high: “This year, I’m finally going to exercise regularly!” But the reality is often different. At some point, the membership card is forgotten in the bag, and the inner bastard wins out. But at least the resolution will be tried again next year. After all, the idea is the right one.
  2. Eat healthier
Alongside sport comes the next classic: “I’m going to eat healthier!” Less sugar, more vegetables, maybe even the promise to give up fast food completely. But when the first stressful situations of the new year arise or the day has been particularly long, you return to the pizza you ordered. But here, too, the resolution counts—even if you don’t always put it into practice.
  3. Spend more time with family and friends
The desire to spend more time with loved ones is also often at the top. Many people find maintaining contact with family and friends difficult, especially in our hectic everyday lives. But by January at the latest, the smartphone is picked up more often to make appointments, plan trips, or simply have a quiet chat. As long as the resolution is still fresh in January, it will be implemented—and that’s what counts.
  4. Reduce stress and live a more relaxed life
A recurring resolution: less stress, more serenity. Yoga, meditation, or simply taking more breaks in everyday life are the tools that are supposed to help us escape stress. But the stressful job, the emails that never end, and the constant pressure often cause us to fall back into old patterns quickly. But the thought of being less stressed is still a good start—maybe it will work next year.
  5. Save and achieve financial goals
Especially after the expensive holidays, many people think about their wallets: “I’m going to save more this year!” The goals are to keep an eye on your bank account and question your spending habits. But the latest “bargain” on the shopping portal or the tempting voucher is always tempting. Nevertheless, pursuing financial security remains a popular goal, even if it is sometimes difficult to stay true to it.
  6. Learning new things and continuing your education
Learning something new always sounds like a great idea. Whether it’s a new language, a new hobby, or a course for professional development, the urge for personal growth is strong. But doubts quickly arise after the first few hours of self-study or a glance at the busy schedule. But, as with all resolutions, here, too, it’s the beginning that counts, and who knows, maybe the motivation will last longer after all.
  7. Give up bad habits
Giving up bad habits is a popular goal, whether it’s smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or spending too much time on your cell phone. But the temptation to fall back is great. Who doesn’t want to “quickly” watch the latest episode of their favorite series or hold their favorite drink in their hand? But even here, a good resolution to change something remains an important step—and perhaps it will be put into practice at some point.

To achieve your resolutions, you should set realistic and specific goals. Instead of saying, “I’m going to do more sport,” you could resolve to go to the gym twice a week, for example. Small, achievable goals increase motivation and make it easier to stay on the ball. And the most important thing is that it’s not about perfection. Sometimes small steps are much more valuable than big resolutions that quickly fall by the wayside.
