If Geosphere Austria’s forecast is correct, we can look forward to calm, high-pressure weather and glorious sunshine at the end of the year. Austria should only prepare for rainfall again after the New Year.

At the start of the new week, fog and high fog patches are often very persistent in the Rhine Valley and the northern Alpine foothills. In all other areas, the fog over the lowlands will often clear during the morning, and the weather will be mostly bright and sunny. The wind will generally be light, with only moderate westerly winds in the east. Morning temperatures will be between minus ten and plus two degrees, while daytime highs will vary between minus two and plus ten degrees, with the mildest temperatures again at medium altitudes.

End of the year offers fog and sunshine
In the Rhine Valley, over the lowlands in the north, east, and southeast, and in the southern basins, there will be widespread fog and high fog on Tuesday. These may persist in some regions and remain cloudy in others. Away from the fog, the sunny weather will continue. The wind will be light. Early temperatures are minus ten to minus one degree, with daily highs depending on fog, sunshine, and altitude, minus three to plus ten degrees.
On New Year’s Day, there will be a few patches of shallow fog here and there at the beginning of Wednesday, which will mostly be short-lived. Then the sunshine will predominate. However, the sky will not be unclouded, as extensive veil clouds will spread from the north, dampening the sunlight a little. From the Mühlviertel to the eastern edge of the Alps, the wind will be moderate to brisk in places from westerly directions; otherwise, light winds will prevail. Early temperatures are minus nine to plus two degrees, during the day with four to twelve degrees, sometimes quite mild.

First precipitation in the new year
A disturbance will touch the north on Thursday. This will bring a few patches of cloud. In parts of Upper Austria and Lower Austria, it may also rain lightly at times from around midday. The wind will blow briskly from southwest to west on the northern side of the Alps and in the east; otherwise, it will be weaker. Early temperatures will range from minus nine degrees in some Alpine valleys to two degrees in the eastern lowlands. Daytime highs will mostly be between five and eleven degrees.
Friday will be cloudy. In the south, there will be some sunshine in between, and it will remain dry. Otherwise, with a snow line initially between 500 and 1,000 meters, there will be some rain, sleet, or snow. Precipitation will also fall for longer periods in the Alps, although the snow line may rise well above 1,000 meters in the afternoon with milder air in the west. The wind will be predominantly from the south to the west and will be weak, sometimes a little brisk. Minimum temperatures are minus five to plus two degrees, and maximum daytime temperatures are mostly between two and six degrees.
