To the north of the main Alpine ridge, clouds will predominate, and unproductive snow showers will continue to fall. Only in the afternoon will the cloud cover clear up a little in some areas. In the rest of Austria, it will be largely dry from early morning and often sunny in the country’s southern parts. In the north and east, sunny weather will only set in later in the day. The wind is often moderate to brisk from the west to northwest. Early temperatures minus 6 to 0 degrees, daily highs minus 1 to plus 5 degrees
Beware of freezing rain
The situation will be particularly problematic when temperatures drop below freezing in the morning. Rain could hit cold ground and freeze, especially in Carinthia and Styria. This leads to black ice and increases the risk of accidents on roads and sidewalks. Drivers and pedestrians should be particularly careful in these regions.
What you should bear in mind
Drivers: Plan longer driving times and avoid unnecessary journeys in high-risk areas. Winter tires are essential.
Pedestrians: Wear non-slip footwear, especially in regions with known frost conditions.
Provide road salt: Residents of frost-prone locations should keep road salt or sand on hand to keep sidewalks and driveways safe.
The forecast in detail
Vienna: In the morning, dense clouds often prevail, and the last drops of rain or snowflakes may still fall. After the clouds clear, the sun will increasingly prevail from midday onwards. A moderate to brisk westerly wind will blow. Early temperatures are around 0 degrees, and daytime highs are around 3 degrees.
Lower Austria: The morning will still be mostly cloudy, and it will sometimes snow in the congested areas of the Mostviertel. From midday, the clouds will slowly clear, and in the afternoon, the sun will shine for longer periods, especially in the lowlands. The wind will blow moderately to briskly from the west. Early temperatures will be minus 4 to plus 1 degree, and daytime highs will be minus 1 to plus 4 degrees.
Burgenland: The remaining clouds of a cold front will move southeast by noon, and sunny weather will set in in the afternoon. The wind will be moderate to brisk in northern Burgenland, otherwise weak to moderate from the northwest. Early temperatures will be minus 1 to plus 1 degree, and daytime highs will be 2 to 5 degrees.
Styria: Along the northern side of the Alps, there will still be dense clouds on Friday; the sun will only appear here occasionally, and there may still be a little snow here and there. Winds from the west to the northwest will be brisk at times. Further south, especially in the foothills, the sun will soon shine again from a bright blue sky, with significantly less wind. There, residual clouds and the last sleet showers will move southeast in the morning hours. After early temperatures between minus 5 and 0 degrees, the temperature will rise to highs between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees.
Carinthia: There will be plenty of sunshine on Friday. Towards the west, it will be mostly sunny from the start, while in the eastern parts of the country, the clouds from the night front will not clear until the morning. With maximum temperatures of 0 to +3 degrees, it will be colder in many areas than recently.
Upper Austria: On Friday, there will still be some clouds at the beginning with unproductive snow showers, but these will decrease for now. In addition, moderate to brisk westerly winds (peaks in the lowlands just over 50 km/h). During the day, the clouds break up a little, and the sun sometimes comes out. Nevertheless, there will be more snow showers during the day, which may pass through quickly. Sleet is also possible locally. Early temperatures: -6 to 0 degrees, highs: -2 to 2 degrees.
Salzburg: On Friday, there will still be some clouds with unproductive snow showers. The clouds will break up a little, and the sun will come out at times during the day. During the course of the day, however, a few snow showers will quickly pass through. The wind will blow moderately, sometimes briskly, from west to northwest, especially in Lungau and northern Flachgau. Early temperatures: -7 to 0 degrees, highs: -4 to 2 degrees.
Tyrol: Clouds will predominate in the morning, and it will still snow frequently, especially on the northern edge of the Alps and in the lowlands; otherwise, it will only snow occasionally. In the afternoon, snow showers are only expected in the lowlands; in the inner Alps, the sun will prevail against the clouds. East Tyrol will be mostly sunny throughout the day with a weak Tauern wind. Lows: -6 to -1 degrees, highs: -2 to +3 degrees.
Vorarlberg: Clouds will dominate in the morning, with a few snow showers, especially in the mountains. It will be dry in the afternoon, and the clouds will clear up quite well away from the mountains. Lows: -4 to +1 degrees, highs: -1 to +4 degrees.
