The Philippine Embassy in Austria, in collaboration with the Austro-Philippine Society and the Vienna City government, invites you to a remarkable lecture titled “Reliving Rizal: Friendship with Austria’s Johannes Nordmann.” This event will occur at the Vienna City Library on 24 January 2025, from 1400H to 1600H.
Dr. Johann Stockinger, a distinguished scholar with a doctorate in cultural and social anthropology and a background in formal logic from the University of Vienna, will deliver the lecture. Dr. Stockinger, also the founder of the Austro-Philippine Society, will present his insights on a newly discovered letter written in German by Dr. José Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero, to Austrian newspaper editor Johannes Nordmann.
This letter sheds light on the unique bond between Rizal and Nordmann, who was the president of Austria’s Concordia press club, the world’s oldest press club. Rizal’s correspondence highlights his exceptional intellect and eloquence and reflects his ability to build bridges with influential figures in Europe.
Dr. Stockinger’s lecture promises to delve into the historical significance of this correspondence, offering a deeper understanding of Rizal’s interactions with European intellectuals and his role in fostering international connections.
