French fries are greasy and unhealthy. That’s what they say, but it’s not entirely true. Deep-fried potato sticks can also have a healthy effect on the body.
Eating too many fried foods can lead to diabetes, serious heart disease or even strokes. That’s the general opinion when it comes to chips. That’s not wrong, but it’s not entirely true either. A study shows that they can have a positive effect on our metabolism.
With fries, it’s all about the quantity
The researchers examined changes in body fat mass, body weight, fasting blood sugar and insulin in people who ate French fries or almonds for a month. Apart from a slight increase in blood sugar and insulin levels following direct consumption, there were no differences between the French fries group and the almond eaters.
According to the study, the main reason for this was the quantity of fries consumed. The daily consumption of a 300-calorie portion of chips did not lead to any greater weight gain compared to the equivalent amount of almonds. It also did not increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
People with type 2 diabetes were excluded from the study
However, people with type 2 diabetes were not included in the study, which is why this group cannot be included in the results. Research leader David Allison and his team would like to conduct a new study that explicitly examines the connection between physical health and the regular consumption of French fries.
