In an online vote by film fans, Schönbrunn Palace was voted the best film/series location in Europe. The HBO mini-series The Regime, starring Kate Winslet, was filmed here in 2023.
VIENNA: There is good news for all film fans in Vienna and Europe. Schönbrunn Palace has been voted the most beautiful film location in Europe by the public. This was voted for in the annual election for the best film/series location of the European Film Commission Network (EUFCN).
The jury chose the Norwegian island of Frøya in Trøndelag with its “dramatic, windswept coastline and unique blend of fishing heritage and luxurious architecture”. The “Netflix” series “Billionaire Island” was filmed here.
However, in an online vote, the public voted the Viennese landmark as the most popular filming location in Europe. For the first time, the castle served as the filming location for the residence of reigning dictator Elena Vernham, played by Hollywood star Kate Winslet, in the “HBO”/“Warner Bros.” mini-series “The Regime”, directed by Stephan Frears and Jessica Hobbs. MeinBezirk reported on the filming in 2023:
“Enormous challenge”
“We are thrilled and delighted that the EUFCN Audience Location Award 2024 goes to Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace. Schönbrunn Palace is an extraordinary location that has opened its doors for the first time on this scale for the filming of ‘The Regime’. This was an enormous challenge for the most visited tourist location in Vienna. Still, one that was mastered perfectly by the entire team at Schönbrunn Palace,” said Marijana Stoisits, Managing Director of the Vienna Film Commission, at the award ceremony in Berlin on Tuesday.
The filming at Schönbrunn Palace was the first project to receive funding from the newly established Austrian film funding program “FISAplus” and was shot in Vienna from the end of January to the end of February 2023, explains the Vienna Film Commission.
Strict plans in a historic building
Klaus Panholzer, Managing Director of the Schönbrunn Group, also expressed his pride: “‘The Regime’ was the first international film production to be allowed to shoot in the palace. The film crew, actors and actresses and the Schönbrunn Group team worked hand in hand under strict conditions in a historic building. The award is a visible sign of a job well done”.
In addition to Frøya and Schönbrunn Palace, the jury and the audience could also choose from the filming locations of Mdina (Malta, “Napoleon”), the Stuttgart State Opera (“Cranko”) and the Tajogait volcano (Spain, “La Hojarasca”).
