Last Friday, 14 March 2025, World Sleep Day was celebrated under the motto “Make Sleep Health a Priority.” Scientific findings clearly show that good sleep is essential for our health. However, the right time of day is also crucial. A recent study has investigated the optimal time to go to sleep.

An international team of researchers from Stanford University analyzed the sleeping habits of 74,000 people, the data of which came from the UK Biobank. The scientists investigated whether there is a connection between bedtime and mental health—with an astonishing result.

For World Sleep Day 2025: This is the best time to go to sleep
People who are considered “night owls,” i.e., who like to stay up late and go to bed late, were at a particularly high risk of mental illness. Depression and anxiety disorders were significantly more common among them than among early risers. Based on the research results, the scientists recommend switching off the light by 1 a.m. at the latest. If you regularly go to bed later, you could damage your mental health in the long term.

How much sleep influences our psyche
Sleep is essential for processing emotions, regulating stress hormones, and mental performance. A disturbed night’s sleep can impair the production of happiness hormones such as serotonin, increase stress hormone levels, and even weaken emotional resilience.

This explains why people with an irregular or late sleep pattern are more likely to suffer from mental illness.

World Sleep Day 2025—the perfect time for change
World Sleep Day 2025 is a great opportunity to reflect on your sleeping habits. If you’ve been a late-to-bed person up until now, you could adopt a new routine and not only improve the quality of your sleep but also strengthen your mental well-being in the long term.
