The government is planning far-reaching changes to the pension system starting in June 2025. In addition to increased health insurance contributions for pensioners, adjustments to the retirement age, and new regulations for additional earnings are also planned. These measures are part of the restructuring plan for the budget deficit.

Government reaches into the pockets of senior citizens
From 1 June 2025, health insurance contributions for pensions will be increased from 5.1 percent to 6.0 percent. This will lead to a noticeable reduction in net pensions. An average old-age pension means an annual loss of EUR 182.56 for men and EUR 168.14 for women.

The average old-age pension in 2024 will be EUR 2,321.40 gross for men and EUR 1,594.24 gross for women. After the planned pension increase in 2025 and health insurance contributions, men would receive an average of EUR 2,029.32 net per month and women EUR 1,558.98.

Further reform measures and tax relief
As part of the pension reform, the government plans additional changes such as reintroducing partial aliquoting of pension accounts, increasing the de facto retirement age, and introducing a new “partial pension.”
