How do Austrians prefer to pay? According to a recent survey by bank99, in which 400 people took part, cash remains the preferred payment method, especially for smaller amounts (75 percent), trade services (66 percent) and restaurant visits (60 percent). Nevertheless, debit cards also play an important role, for example, at petrol stations (49%), clothing stores (47%) and supermarkets (43%).

Payment behaviour: Women prefer cash, and men prefer digital payment methods
However, there are differences between the sexes: Women prefer cash more often, while men increasingly use credit cards or smartphone payments. Debit cards are equally popular with both genders. “Cash remains important in Austria, but a mix of payment methods offers many advantages. Digital payments offer convenience, security and transparency – especially online or for larger amounts. They also make tracking your spending easier and protect against loss or theft,” explains Patricia Kasandziev, Member of the Management Board for Market & Digitalization at bank99.

Mobile payment is booming in Austria
Although cash remains the most commonly used payment method overall, younger people increasingly prefer digital methods such as smartphone or smartwatch payments, especially for leisure activities, public transport tickets, and online shopping. One example is that a quarter of under-30s already pay for fashion purchases using their mobile phone, compared to less than ten percent of over-30s.

Online payment services and credit cards: Usage trends in Austria
Online payment services are gaining popularity across all age groups: 45 percent use them for online purchases and 20 percent for delivery services. On the other hand, credit cards are particularly popular with older generations: 35% of over 49-year-olds use them to pay online, compared to just 13% of younger people. “A credit card offers many advantages, especially online or when travelling – from additional security and worldwide acceptance to insurance benefits,” explains Kasandziev.

Current banking trends in Austria: the shift towards digital solutions
A clear trend is emerging in banking: 55% of people now prefer a banking app, while traditional online banking on a PC is becoming less important at just 29%. Older people (over 49) use computers more often, while younger people manage their finances almost exclusively via apps. Men use computers slightly more, while women often use self-service devices or the counter. Despite digital development, personal advice in branches remains important for many.
