On 29 March 2025, the moon will obscure the sun to a small extent. While the event will be visible worldwide, it can be watched in its entirety in Vienna.

The solar eclipse worldwide
This solar eclipse is only partial from a global perspective. It will not occur as a total or annular eclipse anywhere on Earth. The eclipse can be observed in almost all of Europe, with the exception of the Balkans and the southernmost regions of Italy. It will also be visible in parts of North Africa and the North Atlantic, including Iceland, Greenland, and Svalbard.

Visibility of the eclipse in Vienna
In Vienna, the moon will cover around 14% of the sun’s disk, and the eclipse will last for 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Key data for Vienna
Start of the eclipse: 11:40:55 a.m.
Maximum eclipse: 12:17:51 hrs
End of the eclipse: 12:54:52 hrs
Best places and tips for observation
There are a few things to remember when observing the partial solar eclipse on 29 March 2025 in the best possible way. As the eclipse in Vienna will be rather small at only 14%, a clear view of the sun is particularly important:

Elevated locations: Hills or mountains like the Kahlenberg, Leopoldsberg, or Wienerberg offer an unobstructed view of the sky.
Open spaces without obstacles: Parks such as the Donaupark, the Jesuitenwiese in the Prater, or the Marchfeld are good options.
South-facing places: As the solar eclipse takes place at midday, you should choose a southern orientation with as few high-rise buildings or trees in your field of vision as possible.
Important observation tips
Never look at the sun with the naked eye! Special solar eclipse glasses or welded glasses with protection level 14 are necessary. Normal sunglasses do not offer sufficient protection.

Only telescopes and binoculars with protective filters are used. Danger to eyes without filters! Photograph with caution: If you want to take eclipse pictures with a camera or smartphone, you will need a solar filter for the lens. Pay attention to the weather: If the sky is cloudy, it is worth moving to a region with better viewing conditions early on.

Types of solar eclipses
Partial eclipse: The moon only covers part of the sun.
Total eclipse: The moon covers the sun completely, making it dark for a short time.
Annular eclipse: The moon is too far away from the earth to cover the sun completely. A bright solar ring remains visible.
Hybrid eclipse: A rare combination of total and annular eclipse that appears differently depending on the location.
This is how often the spectacle occurs.
There are at least two solar eclipses worldwide yearly, and in rare cases, up to five. However, as visibility depends on location, it can take centuries before a total eclipse can be seen again in a particular place.

Next solar eclipse worldwide and in Vienna
21 September 2025: Partial, not visible in Vienna
12 August 2026: Total eclipse worldwide, partially visible in Vienna (89% coverage)
2 August 2027: Total eclipse worldwide, partially visible in Vienna (56% coverage)
1 June 2030: Annular eclipse worldwide, partially visible in Vienna (75% coverage)
20 March 2034: Total eclipse worldwide, partially visible in Vienna (18% coverage)
To experience a total solar eclipse, you must travel to places where the moon completely covers the sun. The next total solar eclipse visible in Vienna will only occur in the distant future.
