The Austrian police issued an urgent warning on Tuesday about the “fake doctor” scam. Callers pretend to be doctors and pretend that close relatives of potential victims are suffering from cancer. They demand large sums of money for medication for immediate treatment. The damage caused in this way amounts to a mid-six-figure euro sum nationwide, reported the Lower Austria Provincial Police Directorate in a press release.

The supposed doctors usually call from home landline numbers. The money for an allegedly vital and immediate treatment is then handed over at an agreed-upon meeting point or directly at the victim’s home address. The Federal Criminal Police Office has issued an Austria-wide warning.
The money for allegedly vital and immediate treatment is then handed over at an agreed-upon time. The Provincial Police Directorate of Lower Austria advised people to be suspicious of calls from strangers, especially if pressure is exerted. The credibility of the story presented should be questioned, and, if necessary, contact should be made with the family member who appears to be affected. Money and valuables should also never be handed over to strangers.
