Austrians will spend an average of 159 euros on Easter gifts and festive treats this year. Retailers expect sales of 270 million euros, with chocolate bunnies and eggs once again being particularly popular as gifts alongside toys.
Austrians spend an average of 159 euros per person on gifts and festive food at Easter. Retailers expect a turnover of 270 million euros. Chocolate bunnies, eggs, and toys are bought most frequently, according to a survey conducted by the Austrian Retail Association and the market research institute Reppublika, which was published on Monday.
Easter is the second most important holiday for brick-and-mortar retailers after Christmas, said Rainer Will, managing director of the Austrian Retail Association. Good Friday is also the second-biggest day of the year for food retailers in terms of sales. On average, 100 euros are spent on gifts, chocolate bunnies, and decorations, while 59 euros are spent on food. After a slump of around ten percent in the previous year, the level of 2023 should, therefore, be reached again, according to the press release. Just under one in five people do not give presents at Easter – often for religious or family reasons.
Styrians, Carinthians and Viennese are particularly generous at Easter
According to the representative survey, the inhabitants of the southern federal states of Styria and Carinthia are particularly generous with EUR 167 per capita, followed by the Viennese with EUR 165. Upper Austria and Salzburg are at the lower end of the scale with 145 euros.
Chocolate, eggs and toys are popular gifts
The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber also commissioned a survey to mark Easter. The survey conducted by KMU Forschung Austria revealed that 77% of Austrians give presents to someone at Easter. A total of 55 euros per person is spent on gifts, more than in the previous year (50 euros). Total spending for Easter is therefore expected to be 295 million euros, which is also slightly higher than the previous year (270 million euros).
According to the Chamber of Commerce survey, the most popular gifts remain sweets, chocolate, and pralines (70 percent), followed by colored eggs (44 percent) and toys (28 percent). Cash (19 percent) and flowers or plants (17 percent) are also frequently given as gifts. In total, around 23 million chocolate bunnies and 68 million Easter eggs are expected to find their way into people’s nests.
For the survey, 1,009 people representative of the Austrian population were interviewed online between March 13 and 25, 2025.
