Hotel beds are usually adorned with a bed scarf, which is usually carelessly packed away immediately. What is a bed scarf, and what is it actually for?

Many hotel rooms have a narrow coverlet at the foot of the bed. This throw, also called a bed scarf, is often about one meter wide and made of a more robust fabric than sheets and bedding.

At first glance, the cover seems useless – it is hardly suitable for snuggling up in. If you want to slip under the blanket, you often throw it next to the bed. What is the purpose of the bed scarf?

In the hotel industry, the cover is also called a plaid. According to Best Western Hotels Resorts, it has both functional and visual reasons. It is used for hygiene and to protect the bed linen. “For example, guests like to sit at the end of the bed in their day clothes or place their jacket, handbag, keys, or other items on it. A plaid at the foot of the bed then prevents direct contact with the fresh bed,” explains a spokesperson for the hotel group. The bed scarf also prevents keys and smartphones from slipping easily between the blankets and mattresses.

According to the hotel group, the bed scarf is also a modern and more practical alternative to the large and unwieldy bedspread. It is used specifically as a design element: “It visually enhances a room, and its design and color are adapted to the design of the entire room and hotel,” says the spokeswoman.
