Do you usually store your bread in plastic bags? Then you should rethink this habit!

You probably know the situation:

You have bought a deliciously fresh loaf of bread from the bakery and assume that it will keep for at least a week. But on the second day, you realize that the bread has become so dry that it is barely edible.

What has gone wrong?

There are several factors to consider when storing bread.

Packaging plays an important role

According to baker Joost Arijs, both the packaging and the condition of the bread are decisive for its shelf life.

“The paper bags that bakeries use contain kerosene. This prevents the bread from drying out,” he explains and also recommends not cutting the bread into slices.

This is reported by the Gelderlander medium.

One of the most common storage methods is the use of paper bags. These are good for sliced bread, but are not always the best solution, as the baker explains:

“We recommend wrapping the bread in tissue paper or simply in a kitchen towel. This way, the fresh bread remains edible for at least two to three days,” says Arijs.

Sliced bread, on the other hand, has a shorter shelf life and should be eaten as quickly as possible to prevent it from drying out.

Avoid plastic bags

If you usually store your bread in plastic bags, you should bear in mind that moisture can easily form in them and the crispy crust is lost.

A paper bag is therefore the better alternative. It may also be worth buying a plastic or metal bread tin.

Freezing bread – an alternative with limitations

Freezing bread is also an option, but baker Arijs is critical of this method.

“Freezing affects the crispness of the bread and changes the taste,” he notes and adds:

“In addition, freezing does not necessarily extend the shelf life of the bread after defrosting.”

To sum up, it’s a good idea to buy a whole loaf from the bakery, store it properly and only cut off the slices you need at a time.

This will ensure that the taste and consistency are optimally preserved.
