According to a survey, most respondents know little about artificial intelligence and are critical of the technology.

A special survey by Statistics Austria shows that around 73 percent of people in Austria have little to no knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI). Only five percent of respondents said they knew a lot about AI, while a further 22 percent described their knowledge as “a lot.” Amazingly, five percent have never heard of AI.

Only 43 percent rate AI as applicable for their job. Almost nine out of ten see no need for generative AI tools. The main reasons cited are data protection, privacy concerns, and a lack of knowledge. Only 13 percent are concerned that AI could lead to job loss.

Alexander Pröll (ÖVP), State Secretary for Digitalization, sees the results as a clear mandate for action: “AI is a technology of the future that we must not close our minds to”. Therefore, the “digital competence offensive” should be given its own focus. By the end of the year, a cross-departmental “Action Plan AI Skills Austria” will be created to coordinate planning and implementation in all areas. “The best technical solution is useless if people cannot use it,” says Pröll.

Overall, more people have a negative attitude towards AI than a positive one. Openness towards the technology is particularly evident among young, highly educated, and male respondents. People with a high school diploma were over one and a half times more likely to rate the increasing use of AI positively than people with a compulsory school-leaving certificate. University graduates were almost three times more likely to do so.
