On Friday, May 23, around 700 places of worship across Austria will host the ecumenical “Long Night of the Churches” again.
Around 3,000 individual program items will be offered. The event will also co-occur in parts of Switzerland, South Tyrol, Italy, and the Czech Republic. This year’s theme is “We can #open.” Once again, 300,000 visitors are expected.
The Long Night of Churches is a “living sign of ecumenism in action and an open door for all those who want to experience and rediscover the church”, emphasizes the Armenian bishop and chairman of the World Council of Churches, Tiran Petrosyan, in his welcoming address in the programme booklet for the “Long Night”. The ecumenical cooperation of all 16 churches in the ÖRKÖ makes the “Long Night” a “unique celebration of faith and fellowship”.
Visitors can expect around 800 program items in 180 participating churches in the Archdiocese of Vienna. The singer Timna Brauer, for example, will perform in the Zum Göttlichen Wort parish. Prior to this, a panel discussion on the topic of “Hope in today’s society” will take place at the Vienna Seminary, with the Freedom Party MP Dagmar Belakowitsch also participating.
In the Czech Republic, more than 1,600 churches are participating in around 4,000 events, while Switzerland is hosting around 2,000 events and South Tyrol around 100. In recent years, the major church event has always attracted a good 300,000 visitors across Austria. The organizers are expecting the same number this year.
